জাপানের অসামরিক ও রাষ্ট্রীয় পতাকা (আগস্ট ১৩, ১৯৯৯. -). পতাকার অনুপাত: ২:৩। জাপানের জাতীয় পতাকা ও সঙ্গীত বিষয়ক আইন অনুযায়ী পতাকার নকশা প্রস্তুত করা হয়।
জাপান সাম্রাজ্যের অসামরিক ও রাষ্ট্রীয় পতাকা (জানুয়ারি ২৭, ১৮৭০ – আগস্ট ১২, ১৯৯৯)। পতাকার অনুপাত- ৭ঃ১০. চাকতিটি ১ শতাংশ বাম দিকে সরে এসেছে। ঘোষণা নং-৫৭ অনুযায়ী পতাকার নকশা প্রস্তুত করা হয়েছে।
সামরিক পতাকা পতাকার অনুপাত: ৮:৯ (প্রায়)

জাপানের জাতীয় পতাকা, জাপানি ভাষায় নিশোকি (Nisshōki, 日章旗 "সূর্য পতাকা") বা হিনোমারু (Hinomaru, 日の丸 "সূর্য চাকতি") নামে পরিচিত। পতাকায় সাদা পটভূমির উপর মাঝে লাল চাকতি (উদীয়মান সূর্যের প্রতিনিধিত্বকারী) পতাকার প্রধান বৈশিষ্ট্য। উপকথা অনুসারে এর মূল প্রোথিত আছে, যখন ত্রয়োদশ শতাব্দীতে মঙ্গোলরা জাপান আক্রমণ করে। বৌদ্ধ ভিক্ষু নিচিরেন (Nichiren) তৎকালীন জাপানের সম্রাট, যাকে সূর্য দেবী আমাতেরাসুর (Amaterasu) বংশধর মনে করা হতো, তাকে সূর্য খচিত পতাকা প্রস্তাব করার কথা ছিল। এছাড়া ১২শ শতকে টায়রা (Taira) ও মিনামোতো (Minamoto) গোষ্ঠী দ্বন্দের সময় সামুরাইরা ভাঁজবিশিষ্ট পাখার উপর সূর্যের চাকতির প্রতীক ব্যবহার করেছিল বলে জানা যায়। ১৫শ শতক ও ১৬শ শতকে সেংওকু (যুদ্ধ কবলিত রাষ্ট্র) সময়কালে সামরিক পতাকা হিসাবে ব্যবহৃত হয়। পশ্চিমাদের সাথে বাণিজ্য সম্পর্ক শুরুর পরপরই ১৮৫৪ সালের ৭ই আগস্ট জাপানি জাহাজে ওড়ানোর জন্য আনুষ্ঠানিক পতাকা হিনোমারু নির্বাচন করা হয়।

১৮৬৮ সালে মিইজি পুনর্বহালকালীন (Meiji Restoration) সময়ে, জাতীয় পতাকার জন্য সূর্য চাকতির নকশা গ্রহণ করা হয়। ১৮৭০ সালের ২৭শে জানুয়ারি ঘোষণা নং-৫৭ এর মাধ্যমে অসামরিক পতাকা হিসাবে নির্বাচিত করা হয়। ১৯৯৯ সালের ১৩ই আগস্ট জাপানের জাতীয় পতাকা ও সঙ্গীত বিষয়ক আইনের ঘোষণা নং-১২৭ অনুযায়ী জাতীয় পতাকা হিসাবে নির্বাচিত করা হয়। একই সাথে পতাকার অলঙ্করণ নিশ্চিত করা হয়- পতাকার উচ্চতা:প্রশস্ত অনুপাত হবে ২:৩, চাকতিটি পতাকার কেন্দ্রে থাকবে এবং এর ব্যাস হবে পতাকার উচ্চতার তিন পঞ্চমাংশ।
