The Temptations (disingkat The Temps atau The Tempts) adalah grup vokal asal Amerika Serikat sekaligus salah satu grup tersukses dari Motown Records. Mereka pernah tiga kali memenangi Penghargaan Grammy. Sepanjang lima dekade berkarier, mereka membawakan lagu-lagu dari berbagai irama musik, termasuk di antaranya R&B, doo-wop, funk, disko, soul, dan adult contemporary.
Grup ini berawal dari grup bernama The Elgins yang dibentuk di Detroit, Michigan pada tahun 1960. Walaupun sering berganti-ganti anggota, mereka selalu terdiri dari 5 penyanyi Afrika Amerika. Mereka dikenal dengan setelan panggung, koreografi, dan harmoni vokal yang khas. The Temptations disebut-sebut sebagai grup vokal paling berpengaruh bagi musik soul, sama halnya seperti The Beatles bagi musik rock.[1] Hingga tahun 1982, mereka telah menjual sekitar 22 juta album,[2] dan sekaligus menjadikan The Temptations sebagai salah satu grup tersukses dalam sejarah musik.[3] Mereka adalah grup vokal yang paling menonjol sepanjang tahun 1960-an.[4] Kontrak mereka dengan Motown berlangsung sepanjang 40 tahun, dari tahun 1961 hingga 1977 (16 tahun), dan dari tahun 1980 hingga 2004 (24 tahun). Dari tahun 1977 hingga 1980, mereka dikontrak oleh Atlantic Records. Prestasi The Temptations hanya bisa dikalahkan oleh Stevie Wonder. Sejak tahun 2007, mereka dikontrak oleh Universal Records. Otis Williams adalah satu-satunya anggota pendiri yang masih bertahan.
The Temptations dibentuk dari dua grup vokal asal Detroit, The Distants dan The Primes. Otis Williams (tenor/baritone suara dua), Elbridge "Al" Bryant (tenor suara satu), dan Melvin Franklin (suara bass) berasal dari The Distants. Sementara itu, Eddie Kendricks (tenor suara satu/falseto) dan Paul Williams (tenor/bariton) berasal dari The Primes. Beberapa mantan anggota Temptations nantinya sukses sebagai penyanyi solo, David Ruffin dan Dennis Edwards yang dikontrak Motown, Richard Street (mantan Distant), Damon Harris, Ron Tyson, Ali-Ollie Woodson, Theo Peoples, dan G.C. Cameron. Sama seperti halnya Supremes, formasi Temptations sering sekali berganti-ganti.
Sepanjang karier mereka, 4 singel Temptations sukses di urutan nomor satu Billboard Hot 100 dan 14 singel di urutan nomor satu Billboard R&B. Mereka telah memenangi 3 Penghargaan Grammy ditambah 2 Grammy untuk penulis lagu dan produser rekaman yang membantu mereka mencetak hit "Papa Was a Rollin' Stone" (1972).
