Neo soul

Neo soul adalah genre musik yang merupakan fusi (campuran) dari musik R&B kontemporer, musik soul 1970-an, jazz, jazz fusion, pop, funk, serta unsur-unsur hip-hop. Salah satu unsur yang membedakan neo soul dengan musik R&B kontemporer antara lain penggunaan tema lirik yang mengekspresikan arti dan pesan yang lebih mendalam.[1]

Sejarah dan Perkembangan

Sebagai sebuah genre musik, neo soul muncul pada pertengahan tahun 1990-an melalui album Raphael Saadiq bersama band Tony! Toni! Toné! serta album "Brown Sugar" yang merupakan debut penyanyi D'Angelo. Istilah neo soul sendiri diperkenalkan oleh Kedar Massenburg, produser rekaman Motown Records pada akhir tahun 1990-an, ditandai dengan album penyanyi Erykah Badu "Baduizm" yang dirilis pada 11 Februari 1997. Album ini menjadi penanda penting dalam perkembangan genre neo soul karena Badu mengekspresikan lirik mengenai perjuangan, hubungan, nilai-nilai keluarga, dan pencarian kebijaksanaan.[2]

Album "Baduizm" melesat ke peringkat 2 di tangga album Billboard 200 dan mencapai penjualan tripel platinum. Selain itu Erykah Badu juga menyabet Grammy Award tahun 1997 untuk kategori Best R&B Female Vocal Performance (lagu “On & On”) dan Best R&B Album.[3][4]

Karya Lauryn Hill, baik melalui grup the Fugees dan kemudian solo albumnya "The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill" yang dirilis tahun 1998 juga dipandang sebagai salah satu penanda penting dalam perkembangan genre musik ini.[5][6]
