Keuskupan Purwokerto adalah salah satu keuskupan yang terletak di Indonesia, serta menjadi keuskupan sufragan dalam provinsi gerejawi yang juga dalam kesatuan dengan Keuskupan Agung Semarang, Keuskupan Malang, dan Keuskupan Surabaya.[2] Wilayah Keuskupan Purwokerto meliputi wilayah seluas 15.300 km2 dan mencakup Provinsi Jawa Tengah sebelah barat, yaitu Kabupaten Banjarnegara, Banyumas, Batang, Brebes, Kebumen, Pekalongan, Pemalang, Purbalingga, Purworejo, Tegal, Cilacap, dan Wonosobo, serta Kota Pekalongan dan Kota Tegal.

Sejarah

Pada tahun 1927 para misionaris Hati Kudus (MSC) mulai menetap di Purwokerto. Prefektur Apostolik didirikan ketika jumlah umat 4000 orang pada 25 April 1932. Status itu ditingkatkan menjadi Vikariat Apostolik pada 16 Oktober 1941. Menjadi Diosis atau Keuskupan Purwokerto bersamaan dengan berdirinya hierarki Gereja Katolik Indonesia pada 3 Januari 1961. Jumlah umat Katolik 22.700 orang tersebar dalam 14 paroki pada 1970. Jumlah itu bertambah menjadi 35.600 (1980), lalu 58.800 (1990) dan 71.800 (2000). Menurut statistik 2005, umat Katolik Keuskupan Purwokerto 76.700 orang, tersebar di 21 paroki pada tahun 2004.

Keuskupan Purwokerto memiliki tenaga pastoral klerus sebanyak 51 imam Diosesan dan 37 imam religius menurut statistik imam 2018.

Garis waktu

  • Didirikan sebagai Prefektur Apostolik Purwokerto pada tanggal 25 April 1932, memisahkan diri dari Vikariat Apostolik Batavia
  • Ditingkatkan menjadi Vikariat Apostolik Purwokerto pada tanggal 16 Oktober 1941
  • Ditingkatkan menjadi Keuskupan Purwokerto pada tanggal 3 Januari 1961
