Bangkai adalah tubuh hewan yang telah mati tanpa disembelih.[1] Bangkai merupakan makanan penting bagi berbagai karnivora dan omnivora di sebagian besar ekosistem yang ada di bumi ini. Burung pemakan bangkai, elang,[2] hyena,[3] setan tasmania,[4] koyote,[5] komodo,[6] oposum virginia,[7] serangga yang tergolong famili Silphidae[8] dan Sarcophagidae, serta belatung diketahui memakan bangkai.

Bangkai mulai membusuk segera setelah kematian hewan dan mengundang serangga serta bakteri untuk melakukan pembusukan. Tidak lama setelah itu, senyawa cadaverine dan putrescine keluar dari bangkai sebagai hasil dari aktivitas bakteri dan menyebabkan bau busuk.

Beberapa jenis tumbuhan dan fungi memiliki bau busuk seperti bangkai untuk menarik perhatian serangga sehingga membantu perkembangbiakan tumbuhan dan fungi tersebut. Tumbuhan yang terkenal seperti bunga bangkai dan fungi yang tergolong famili Phallaceae diketahui mengeluarkan bau busuk seperti bangkai.
