O'Hare menyaingi Bandara Internasional Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta sebagai bandara paling sibuk di dunia. Namun pada 2005, Hartsfield mengalahkan O'Hare sebagai bandara tersibguk di dunia dalam arti pemberangkatan dan pendaratan pesawatnya. Ini terutama disebabkan karena pemerintah federal memaksakan pembatasan penerbangan di O'Hare untuk mengurangi penundaan pemberangkatan.
