Karoline Luise xứ Hessen-Darmstadt (tiếng Đức: Karoline Luise von Hessen-Darmstadt; 11 tháng 7 năm 1723 – 8 tháng 4 năm 1783), là người vợ đầu tiên của Karl Friedrich xứ Baden và là con gái của Bá tước Ludwig VIII và Charlotte xứ Hanau-Lichtenberg. Bà có 2 hậu duệ trở thành Đại công tước xứ Baden, trước khi ngai vàng của Baden rơi vào tay hậu duệ của người vợ thứ 2 của Đại công tước Karl vì tuyệt tự dòng nam. Karoline được xem là một nghệ sĩ, một nhà khoa học, nhà sưu tập và chuyên gia thẩm mỹ.

Tiểu sử

Karoline Luise sinh ngày 11 tháng 7 năm 1723 là con gái duy nhất của Ludwig VIII xứ Hessen-Darmstadt và Charlotte xứ Hanau-Lichtenberg. Năm 1726, mẹ của Karoline Luise qua đời và Karoline được nuôi dưỡng bởi cha và ông bà ngoại ở Buchsweiler.[1] Karoline Luise đã sớm được khen ngợi vì tính cách độc lập và sự đa tài của mình.[1] Đã từng có dự tính gả Karoline Luise cho Công tước xứ Cumberland nhưng thất bại. Mặt khác, Karoline Luise cũng từng từ chối lời cầu hôn của Thân vương thế tử Johann Friedrich xứ Schwarzburg-Rudolstadt.[1]

Ngày 28 tháng 1 năm 1751, Karoline Luise kết hôn với Phong địa bá tước (Landgraf) kém bốn tuổi Karl Friedrich xứ Baden-Durlach. Cuộc hôn nhân được dàn xếp để "thắt chặt mối quan hệ giữa hai bên gia đình nhưng dần trở thành một cuộc hôn nhân hạnh phúc vì tình cảm chân thành từ hai bên.[1]

Bà được mô tả là một người phụ nữ có học thức, nói được 5 thứ tiếng và góp phần đưa kinh đô Karlsruhe của Baden trở thành trung tâm văn hoá ở Đức. Bá kết giao với Voltaire, Johann Gottfried Herder, Johann Kaspar Lavater, Johann Wolfgang von Goethe, Friedrich Gottlieb Klopstock, Christoph Willibald Gluck và Christoph Martin Wieland. Bà là thành viên của dàn nhạc cung đình Markgräflich Baden và Học viện Mỹ thuật Đan Mạch, bà có một phòng thí nghiệm được thành lập trong cung điện Karlsruhe.

Bà tự nuôi sống bản thân từ thu nhập của mình và quản lý một nhà máy sản xuất xà phòng và nến. Sức khỏe của bà bị xuống cấp do một cú ngã vào năm 1779, và bà qua đời vì đột quỵ trong chuyến đi cùng con trai. Bộ sưu tập của bà là nền tảng của Staatliche Kunsthalle Karlsruhe và Bảo tàng Lịch sử Tự nhiên Bang Karlsruhe.
