Maldivler, uluslararası basın özgürlüğü endekslerinin ortasından ilk üçte birine kadar sıralanmakta ve büyük ölçüde özgürlüğü göstermektedir. Bununla birlikte, medyada din üzerine tartışmalar sıkı bir şekilde sınırlandırılmıştır.

2011 Freedom House Basın Özgürlüğü Raporu yıllık raporunda Maldivler 50 skorla "kısmen özgür" olarak not alıyor.[1] 2010 yılında, Sınır Tanımayan Gazeteciler, Maldivler'i dünyadaki en özgür 52. basına (178 dereceli ülke arasında) sahip olarak sıraladı.[2]

İsmail Khilath Rasheed tartışması

Kasım 2011'de, gazeteci İsmail Khilath Rasheed'in blogu, sitede "İslam karşıtı materyal" bulunduğu gerekçesiyle İslami İşler Bakanlığı'nın emriyle Maldivler İletişim Otoritesi (CAM) tarafından kapatıldı.[3] Kendini tasavvur eden bir Sufi Müslüman olan Rasheed, daha fazla dini hoşgörü savundu.[4] Blog kapanışı Sınır Tanımayan Gazeteciler[2] ve BM İnsan Hakları Yüksek Komiseri Navanethem Pillay[5] tarafından dini hoşgörüsüzlükte bir artışı temsil ettiği için kınandı.

Rasheed, 10 Aralık'ta daha fazla din özgürlüğü için bir miting düzenlediğinde, miting saldırıya uğradı ve Rasheed'in kafatası kırıldı.[4] Ardından, 23 Aralık'ta İslam'ı korumak için bir karşı gösteri düzenleyen Ortodoks Sünni Adhaalath Partisi'nin[6] çağrısı üzerine tutuklandı. Rasheed, Uluslararası Af Örgütü (onu düşünce mahkûmu ilan eden)[4] ve onun adına Sınır Tanımayan Gazeteciler gibi grupların protestolarının ardından 10 Ocak'ta serbest bırakıldı.
