Caius

Caius veya Gaius (ö. 22 Nisan 296), 17 Aralık 283'ten 296 yılındaki ölümüne dek Roma Piskoposluğu yapmış din adamı.^[1] Geleneksel Hristiyan kaynaklarına göre Dalmaçya'daki Salona (günümüzde Solin) şehri kökenliydi. Babasının da adı Caius olup İmparator Diocletianus'un akrabası soylu bir ailenin mensubuydu.^[2] Etnik olarak İliryalıydı.^[3]

Caius hakkında sahip olunan bilgiler, büyük ölçüde Liber Pontificalis'te aktarılanlarla sınırlıdır. Bu kitap da aktardıklarının kaynağı olarak Azize Susanna'nın öldürülmesine dair efsaneyi kullanır. Bu efsaneye göre, Caius, Castulus ve Tibertius'un Hristiyanlığa döndürdüğü kişileri vaftiz etmiş,^[4] Roma Katakomblarına sığınmış, burada öldürülmüştür. Hristiyan geleneğinde aziz olarak anılır.^[5]
