René Just Haüy (známy aj pod menom abbé Haüy, kvôli titulu čestný kanonik Notre-Dame) (* 28. február 1743, Saint-Just-en-Chaussée, Francúzsko – † 3. jún 1822, Paríž) bol francúzsky mineralóg, ktorý je považovaný za zakladateľa kryštalografie.[1]

Životopis

Narodil sa v Saint-Just-en-Chaussée v departmente Oise. Jeho rodičia boli z nižšej vrstvy a len vďaka dobrosrdečnosti známych mohli syna poslať do škôl. Haüy najskôr študoval botaniku, ale po nehode sa začal zaujímať o iné odvetvie prírodných vied - mineralógiu. Podľa legendy mu vypadol kus fluoritu a rozbil sa na menšie kocky, čo viedlo Haüya k vysloveniu tézy o periodicite kryštálových štruktúr. Tento objav a sformulovanie matematickej teórie Haüya v Traité de minéralogie posunulo autora v spoločenskom rebríčku.

Počas revolučných rokov bol uväznený, hrozila mu dokonca poprava, ktorej zabránil intervenciou iný prírodovedec Étienne Geoffroy Saint-Hilaire. V roku 1802 sa stal profesorom mineralógie v Národnom múzeu, ale v roku 1814 bol Bourbonovcami, ktorí sa vrátili k moci, zosadený a posledné roky života opäť trel biedu.
