Günter Wilhelm Grass (* 16. október 1927, Slobodné mesto Gdansk – † 13. apríl 2015, Lübeck, Nemecko)[1] bol popredný nemecký prozaik, básnik, dramatik a výtvarník. V roku 1999 dostal Nobelovu cenu za literatúru.

Preslávil ho jeho prvý román Plechový bubienok (Die Blechtrommel, 1959), ktorý sa zaraďuje k popredným dielam európskej povojnovej literatúry a je kľúčovým dielom magického realizmu.

Životopis

Narodil sa v Gdaňsku. Po skončení druhej svetovej vojny sa ocitol v Nemecku, kde sa vyučil za kamenára. V Düsseldorfe vyštudoval Vysokú školu výtvarných umení. Bol členom Skupiny 47 až do jej zániku v roku 1990. Jeho slávny román Plechový bubienok (Die Blechtrommel) bol preložený do mnohých jazykov a aj sfilmovaný.

Zomrel 13. apríla 2015 v nemeckom Lübecku vo veku 87 rokov.

Politika

Günter bol silným stúpencom Sociálnodemokratickej strany Nemecka (SPD). Vplyv jeho ľavicových politických názorov sa prejavuje aj v jeho dielach.

Ocenenia

Grass bol nositeľom mnohých ocenení. V roku 1999 mu bola udelená Nobelova cena za literatúru.

  • Grassova divadelná dráma Plebejci skúšajú povstanie (1966) spôsobila, že bol do neskorých 80. rokov v NDR nežiaducou osobou.
  • Po invázii vojsk Varšavskej zmluvy do Česko-Slovenska v roku 1968 pomáhal morálne a materiálne česko-slovenským disidentom.
  • Jeho zatiaľ posledné, autobiografické dielo Pri šúpaní cibule (Beim häuten der Zwiebel, 2006) sa stalo veľmi kontroverzným. Grass sa tu priznáva, že ako mladý bol členom Waffen-SS. Nositelia Nobelovej ceny by však nemali mať nacistickú minulosť.
