Stefania is a group of frogs in the family Hemiphractidae.[1] They live in in the Guiana Shield in southern Venezuela, Guyana, and northern Brazil.[2] Most of these frogs live on tepui, which are table-shaped highlands, but S. evansi also lives closer to sea level. On most mountains, there are only 1–2 species from this genus, but five live on Mount Ayanganna[3] and Mount Wokomung has six.[4] People usually see them near streams at low levels on branches or leaves or on the ground near plants and rocks.
These frogs hatch out of eggs as small froglets, not tadpoles. The eggs sit on the mother frog's back until they hatch. People call these frogs carrying frogs in English. Some frogs in the family Hemiphractidae do this too.
There are 20 Stefania species:[2]
