The title of Senator of the College of Justice refers to a judge of the Court of Session, the supreme civil court of Scotland. Senators also serve as judges of the High Court of Justiciary, the supreme criminal court of Scotland. Collectively, they form part of the College of Justice, which was established in 1532 by King James V of Scotland.[1]

History

The College of Justice was created by the College of Justice Act 1532 to ensure justice was administered fairly and efficiently across Scotland. Senators of the College of Justice were originally drawn from the clergy, nobility, and legal professionals. Over time, the role evolved into a professional judiciary, with Senators becoming some of the most senior legal figures in Scotland.[2]
