Nicholas Jay Bjugstad (born July 17, 1992) is an American professional ice hockey forward. He currently plays for the New York Islanders of the National Hockey League (NHL). He has also played for the Florida Panthers, Pittsburgh Penguins, Minnesota Wild, Arizona Coyotes, Edmonton Oilers, Utah Hockey Club, and St. Louis Blues.

Career

Before playing in the NHL, Bjugstad played three years with the Minnesota Golden Gophers of the Western Collegiate Hockey Association (WCHA). He had a successful time with the Golden Gophers. He was named to both the All-WCHA First Team and All-WCHA Third Team. He was also named a AHCA West Second-Team All-American.[1]

He was drafted 19th overall by the Florida Panthers in the 2010 NHL entry draft. On April 3, 2013, Bjugstad signed a three-year, $2.7 million entry-level contract to join the Panthers.[2]

On April 6, 2013, Bjugstad made his NHL debut in a 4–3 loss against the Washington Capitals.[3] On April 27, Bjugstad scored his first NHL goal against Anders Lindbäck in a 5–3 win against the Tampa Bay Lightning.[4] On December 31, 2014, Bjugstad signed a six-year, $24.6 million contract to stay with the Panthers.[5] On March 6, 2018, Bjugstad recorded his first NHL hat-trick in a 5–4 overtime loss against the Tampa Bay Lightning.[6]

On February 1, 2019, the Panthers traded Bjugstad along with Jared McCann to the Pittsburgh Penguins in exchange for Derick Brassard, Riley Sheahan, a 2019 second-round draft pick, a 2019 fourth-round draft pick, and a 2019 fourth-round draft pick.[7] He played parts of two seasons with the Penguins.

On September 11, 2020, the Penguins traded Bjugstad to the Minnesota Wild in exchange for a 2021 conditional seventh-round draft pick.[8] On July 5, 2021, Bjugstad signed a one-year, $900,000 contract to stay with the Wild.[9] He played two seasons with the Wild.

On July 13, 2022, Bjugstad signed a one-year, $900,000 contract to join the Arizona Coyotes.[10] He scored 13 goals and recorded 10 assists for 23 points in 59 regular season games for the Coyotes.

On September 11, 2020, the Coyotes traded Bjugstad along with Cam Dineen to the Edmonton Oilers in exchange for Michael Kesselring and a 2023 third-round draft pick.[11] He scored 4 goals and recorded 2 assists for 6 points in 19 regulars season games for the Oilers. He also scored 3 goals in 12 playoff games for the team.

On July 1, 2023, Bjugstad signed a two-year, $4.2 million contract to rejoin the Arizona Coyotes.[12] After the Coyotes team was suspended from operating, Bjugstad and the rest of the roster were transferred to the new expansion team Utah Hockey Club. He played one season with the Utah Hockey Club.

On July 1, 2025, Bjugstad signed a two-year, $1.75 million contract to join the St. Louis Blues.[13] He scored 6 goals and recorded 1 assist in 35 regular season games for the Blues.

On February 4, 2026, the Blues traded Bjugstad to the New Jersey Devils in exchange for Thomas Bordeleau and a 2026 conditional fourth-round draft pick.[14]

Personal life

Bjugstad's uncle Scott Bjugstad was also a professional hockey player, playing 317 games in the NHL.[15]
