The Township of Esquimalt is a district municipality in the province of British Columbia, Canada. It is located on Vancouver Island and is in the Capital regional district.
The population of Esquimalt was 17,533 as reported by the 2021 Canadian census.[1] The mayor of Esquimalt is Barbara Desjardins.[2] Esquimalt is home to the Royal Canadian Navy's Pacific fleet naval base.[3]
Before Europeans arrived, Kosampsom (now Esquimalt) lived in the area for over 4000 years.[4] Esquimalt's name from the indigenous phrase Es-whoy-malth or x̣ʷiméɫǝɫ, which means "place of gradually shoaling water".[5] European settlers arrived in 1790 when Gonzalo López de Haro and Juan Carrasco onboard the Princess Royal during Manuel Quimper's expedition.
