Severe Cyclonic Storm Dana[a] was a tropical cyclone. In October 2024, it affected West Bengal, Odisha, and Bangladesh. It was the third named cyclone o
More than 662,000 people evacuated (left their homes behind) to prepare for the cyclone. Dana caused a lot of rain in Odisha. Hundreds of trees were uprooted (pulled out). Some power outages happened. A woman in a shelter died. Officials thought that she died from cardiac arrest. In West Bengal, four people went missing and four died. In Bangladesh, one person died. Some trees fell on buildings.
On the same day, Dana made landfall (crossed onto land from water) near Bhitarkanika National Park [en], a place in north Odisha (an Indian state). At that time, it had wind speeds of around 63 mi (101 km).[8] It became weaker on top of land.[9] On 26 October, it became a remnant low (a weak post-tropical cyclone) over the same area.[10]
Dana dropped a lot of rainfall in Odisha. It made hundreds of trees fall there. On its eastern shore, some areas were flooded.[18][19]Mangroves in Bhitarkanika National Park, where the storm crossed onto land, decreased storm surge (rising water from a storm). Because of them, less damage occurred there and in nearby areas.[20][21][22] In Paradip, 62 mm (2.4 in) of rain fell on 24 October. Fallen trees blocked roads across the state.[23][24] Some houses near the coast had their roofs blown off.[25] The Budhabalanga River [en] rose to 7.84 m (25.7 ft) in the Balasore district. Flash flooding happened in the Balasore and Bhadrak [en] districts.[26]Utility poles were knocked down. This caused power outages.[27][24] Many crops were ruined by water. UNICEF said that 180,000 ha (440,000 acres) of crops were ruined.[19][24] A woman in a shelter in Kendrapara district [en] died. Officials thought that she died because of a cardiac arrest.[28] A minimum of 16,417 houses were damaged.[29]Suresh Pujari, the minister of disaster management, estimated that ₹6,161,900,000 (US$81 million) were lost in the state.[30]
West Bengal
Dana caused four deaths in West Bengal. Three of them were due to electrocution.[31] Multiple boats in the Ganges river at Murshidabad [en] capsized (turned over). This happened due to strong winds. Because of this, four people went missing. Some passengers swam back to land. They were taken to hospitals.[32] In Jodhpur Park [en], Kolkata, 190 mm (7.5 in) of rain fell between 4 am and 8 pm on 25 October.[33]
Bangladesh
A farmer in Betagi [en] died. He was crushed by a falling tree branch.[34] Falling trees also destroyed some buildings in Kathalia [en].[35] Dana dropped the highest amount of rain in the country on Chuadanga [en]. On 25 October, 82 mm (3.2 in) of rain fell there.[36]
Aftermath
On 26 October, Suresh Pujari said that the power came back in 90 percent of the homes in which it was lost. He also said that people whose homes were destroyed would be moved to pucca houses [en]. On 6 November, Odisha's government gave district magistrates [en] of districts hit by Dana ₹4,230,000,000 (US$56 million). They were told to give this money to the people. The government also directly spent ₹23,730,000 (US$310,000) for recovery work.[29]
