Christopher Tanev (born December 20, 1989) is a Canadian professional ice hockey defenceman. He currently plays for the Toronto Maple Leafs of the National Hockey League (NHL). He has also played for the Vancouver Canucks, Calgary Flames, and Dallas Stars.

Career

Before playing in the NHL, Tanev played one year with the RIT Tigers of Atlantic Hockey. He had a successful time with the Tigers. He was named the Atlantic Hockey Rookie of the Year and was also named to the All-Atlantic Hockey Third Team and All-Atlantic Hockey Rookie Team.[1]

He was not drafted by an NHL team. On March 30, 2016, Tanev signed a three-year, 2.7 million entry-level contract to join the Vancouver Canucks of the National Hockey League (NHL).[2] He was sent down to play for their AHL-affiliate Manitoba Moose.

On January 18, 2011, the Canucks called him up and Tanev made his NHL debut in a 4–3 overtime loss against the Colorado Avalanche.[3] On January 24, he recorded his first NHL point after assisting on a Dan Hamhuis goal in a 7–1 win against the Dallas Stars.[4] On February 4, 2013, Tanev scored his first NHL goal and also the game-clinching overtime goal against Devan Dubnyk in a 3–2 overtime win against the Edmonton Oilers.[5] On August 22, 2013, Tanev signed a one-year, $1.5 million contract to stay with the Canucks.[6] On July 5, 2014, Tanev signed a one-year, $2 million contract to stay with the Canucks.[7] On July 5, 2014, Tanev signed a five-year, $22 million contract to stay with the Canucks.[8]

On October 9, 2020, Tanev signed a four-year, $18 million contract to join the Calgary Flames.[9] He played four seasons with the Flames.

On February 28, 2024, the Flames traded Tanev to the New Jersey Devils in exchange for Cole Brady. It was a three-team trade and the Devils traded him to the Dallas Stars in exchange for a 2026 fourth-round draft pick.[10] He scored 1 goal and recorded 4 assists in 19 regular season games for the Stars.

On June 29, 2024, the Stars traded Tanev to the Toronto Maple Leafs in exchange for Max Ellis and a 2026 seventh-round draft pick.[11] On July 1, Tanev signed a six-year, $27 million contract to stay with the Leafs.[12]

Personal life

Tanev's younger brother Brandon Tanev is also a professional hockey in the NHL.[13]
