Brandon Tanev (born December 31, 1991) is a Canadian professional ice hockey left winger. He currently plays for the Utah Mammoth of the National Hockey League (NHL). He has also played for the Winnipeg Jets, Pittsburgh Penguins, and Seattle Kraken.

Career

Before playing in the NHL, Tanev played one season with the Surrey Eagles of the British Columbia Hockey League (BCHL) and four years with the Providence Friars of Hockey East.

He was not drafted by an NHL team. On March 30, 2016, Tanev signed a one-year, $925,000 entry-level contract to join the Winnipeg Jets of the National Hockey League (NHL).[1]

On April 5, 2016, Tanev made his NHL debut in a 2–1 overtime win against the Anaheim Ducks.[2] On July 21, Tanev signed a one-year, $874,125 contract to stay with the Jets.[3] On November 3, he recorded his first NHL point after assisting on a Marko Daňo goal in a 4–3 overtime loss against the Washington Capitals.[4] On November 4, Tanev scored his first two NHL goals against Petr Mrázek in a 5–3 win against the Detroit Red Wings.[5] On July 10, 2017, Tanev signed a one-year, $874,125 contract to stay with the Jets.[6] On March 27, 2018, Tanev recorded his first NHL hat-trick in a 5–4 shootout win against the Boston Bruins.[7] On July 22, Tanev signed a one-year, $1.15 million contract to stay with the Jets.[8]

On July 1, 2019, Tanev signed a six-year, $21 million contract to join the Pittsburgh Penguins.[9] He played parts of two seasons with the Penguins.

On July 21, 2021, the Penguins left Tanev unprotected in the 2021 NHL expansion draft and he was selected by the Seattle Kraken.[10] On December 18, it was announced by the Kraken that Tanev had torn his anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) and had to miss the rest of the season because he needed surgery to repair it.[11] He played four seasons with the Kraken.

On March 7, 2025, the Kraken traded Tanev back to the Winnipeg Jets in exchange for a 2027 second-round draft pick.[12] Tanev scored 1 goal and recorded 4 assists in 19 regular season games during his return to the Jets.

On July 1, 2025, Tanev signed a six-year, $21 million contract to join the Utah Mammoth.[13]

Personal life

Tanev's older brother Christopher Tanev is also a professional hockey in the NHL.[14]

Tanev's wide-eyed expression in his player headshot became a viral meme with Tanev recreating the face for his time with the Kraken and Jets. It has also been recreated by other athletes like NFL running back DeeJay Dallas.[15]
