Bradford Scott Lander (born July 8, 1969)[1] is an American politician and urban planner. He is a progressive member of the Democratic Party. He was the 45th New York City comptroller from 2022 until 2025. He was also a member of the New York City Council from 2010 to 2021. He is the Democratic party nominee for New York's 10th congressional district.[2]
Lander was born in suburban St. Louis, Missouri on July 8, 1969.[3] His family was Jewish.[4][5] Lander earned a bachelor's degree from the University of Chicago in 1991. While in college, he joined the Democratic Socialists of America (DSA).[6][7] He earned a master's degree in anthropology from University College London and later a master's degree in urban planning from the Pratt Institute in New York.[8]
Lander started his political career in New York City in the 1990s. He became well known in the city for his progressive activism.[9] In 2009, Lander was elected to the city council, serving until his election as comptroller in 2021. Throughout his career, he has supported Palestine and criticized Israel for their role in the Gaza war.[10] He has criticized Israel and said their actions in Gaza are a genocide.[11]
In June 2025, when President Donald Trump started deporting many immigrants, Lander began going to immigration court hearings with immigrants.[12] On June 17, Lander was arrested and handcuffed by masked Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) officials at an immigration court while trying to stop ICE was from arresting an immigrant.[13][14][15] He was accused for assaulting an ICE officer, though Lander said this was not true.[16][17][18] Many politicians did not support Lander's arrest, including New York State Governor Kathy Hochul, NYS Attorney General Letitia James and U.S. Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez.[19]
In 2025, Lander unsuccessfully ran for New York City mayor. He came in third in the Democratic primary.[20] Lander became known for cross-supporting and campaigning with Zohran Mamdani. Many saw that this was important for Mamdani's victory in the primary because of the city's ranked-choice voting system.[21]
On December 10, 2025, Lander announced his candidacy for New York’s 10th Congressional District. He ran against moderate incumbent Dan Goldman. His campaign was supported by New York City mayor Zohran Mamdani, U.S. Senator Elizabeth Warren, U.S. Senator Bernie Sanders, and the Working Families Party.[22] The district supported Mamdani in the mayoral general election and Lander in the mayoral primary.[23] Goldman was criticized by Lander and progressive activists in the district for his support of Israel.[24]
Lander beat Goldman in the Democratic primary on June 23, 2026 in a landslide victory.[25][26]
Lander lives in Brooklyn with his wife, Meg Barnette.[27][28] They have two children.
