The Battle of Predište was a battle between the Prince-Bishopric of Montenegro and the Ottoman Empire. The battle took place within Prediš and Bjelice on 3rd December 1756. The battle resulted in a victory for the Montenegrins.

Background

Sultan Osman III gave orders for a new official in Bosnia, named Ahmet Pasha, to take control of Montenegro on his behalf. Ahmet Pasha was instructed to make sure that Montenegro followed the Sultan’s rule, collect taxes from the people, and build strong defenses in two places called Njeguši and Katunska nahija.

At the same time Bishop Vasilije, who was from Montenegro, left the country. His goal was to try to delay the Ottoman Empire's planned attack. He went to two cities, Vienna and Petrograd, hoping that he could convince them to stop the Ottomans from attacking. Unfortunately, he was not successful in his mission and failed to get the delay he wanted. [1]

Battle

The Ottoman forces launched their attack on Montenegro from three places: Grahovo, Nikšić, and Podgorica. They advanced through the region, reaching as far as Čevo. The Montenegrins, however, did not have enough gunpowder or lead to fight back effectively. Despite this, they were able to get some help from a man named Stano Radonjić, who had strong connections with the people in the Boka region. A man from Rišnjevka managed to bring them several thousand bullets, which gave the Montenegrins a fighting chance.

After a fierce battle that lasted for three hours, the Montenegrins managed to defeat the Ottomans completely. During the fight, the Ottoman commander, Osman Pasha, was badly wounded. The battle ended with the signing of a peace treaty in Nikšić at the beginning of the following year.

According to local tradition, the greatest bravery during the battle was shown by a man named Nikac of Rovin, who is remembered as a hero for his courage. [2]
