Sachsen-Coburg i Gotha je ime njemačke porodične dinastije koja je svoj zenit imala u 19. vijeku kad su njeni članovi postali monarsi u Belgiji, Portugalu, Ujedinjenom Kraljevstvu Velike Britanije i Irske i i Bugarskoj.[1]

Historija

Historija te dinastije seže do Dinastije Wettin; iz bavarskog Coburga, čiji su članovi bili kneževi izbornici Elektorata Saksonija od 1423. do 1547.[1] Nakon grananja dinastije u 16. vijeku Albertinska grana Dinastije Wettin zadržala je kao domene manje grofovije na granici Bavarske i Tiringije; Sachsen-Weimar, Sachsen-Coburg, Sachsen-Eisenach, Sachsen-Altenburg.[2]

Nakon brojnih podjela i okrupnjavanja - 1826. stvoreno je dvojno Vojvodstvo Sachsen-Coburg i Gotha[1] vojvode Ernsta I koji se smatra osnivačem nove dinastije.

Ernstov brat Leopold postao je 1831. belgijski kralj, a sin Albert se 1840. oženio britanskom kraljicom Viktorijom i tako postao predak pet narednih britanskih monarha, koji su u Prvom svjetskom ratu promjenili ime u Dinastiju Windsor.[2]

Ernstov rođak Ferdinand oženio se 1836. sa portugalskom kraljicom Marijom II i tako postao osnivač portugalske grane dinastije koja je vladala Portugalom od 1853. do 1910.[2]

Četvrti član te dinastije Ferdinand Maximilian postao je 1887. bugarski knez, a od 1908. i kralj Kraljevine Bugarske pa su on i njegov sinovi vladali tom zemljom do 1946.[2]
