The Astrophysical Journal, ofte forkortet ApJ (uttalt «ap jay») i henvisninger og taler,^[3] er et fagfellevurdert vitenskapelig tidsskrift innen astrofysikk, etablert i 1895 av de amerikanske astronomene George Ellery Hale og James Edward Keeler. Per 2013 blir det utgitt tre 900-siders utgaver per måned.

Siden 1953 har The Astrophysical Journal Supplement Series (ApJS) blitt utgitt i tillegg til The Astrophysical Journal, med generelt lengre artikler for å supplere materialet i tidsskriftet. Denne blir utgitt i seks bind per år, med to 280-siders nummer per bind. I tillegg utgis The Astrophysical Journal Letters (ApJL) som en annen del av The Astrophysical Journal, og inneholder kortere kommunikasjoner.

Tidsskriftet ble, sammen med tilleggsseriene, utgitt av University of Chicago Press på vegne av American Astronomical Society frem til januar 2009. Det ble da overført til IOP Publishing,^[4] som følge av økte økonomiske krav fra University of Chicago Press.^[5] Mye av informasjonen om historien til ApJ, frem til 1995, er utgitt i en artikkel med tittelen Some Statistical Highlights of the Astrophysical Journal, utgitt i 1995.^[6]
