Trastevere er en bydel i vestre Roma. Navnet «Trastevere» kommer fra den latinske benevnelsen «Trans Tiberim» – «på andre siden av Tiber».

Historie

Trastevere var allerede i antikken en tettbefolket bydel og omfattes av den aurelianske muren. I middelalderen var bebyggelsen begrenset til en smal remse nærmest floden Tiber. Trastevere var en av det antikke Romas arbeiderbydeler. Her bodde også mange utlendinger og randgrupper. Det bodde mange jøder her, og de hadde på et tidspunkt hele ti synagoger. Også byens første kristne konsentrerte seg her.

Beskrivelse

Trastevere, som i stor grad har bevart sitt middelalderske gatenett, består av smale gater, smug og torg/plasser. Karakteristisk er Piazza de' Renzi med dens omgivende bebyggelse. I Trastevere ligger flere interessante kirker, blant annet Romas muligens eldste Maria-kirke, Santa Maria in Trastevere med vakre absidemosaikker, og San Pietro in Montorio med Bramantes Tempietto.

I det nordlige Trastevere er Villa Farnesina. Dronning Kristina residerte i Palazzo Corsini i Trastevere.
