Ferguson, Missouri

Ferguson er en forstad til St. Louis i Missouri og inngår i metropolområdet Greater St. Louis. Den hadde ved folketellingen i 2010 21.203 innbyggere.[3]

I 2014 ble Ferguson kjent da den 18-årige Michael Brown den 9. august ble skutt og drept av en politibetjent. Dette førte til omfattende protester mot politibrutalitet/rasisme og plyndringer.[4][5][6][7]

Historie

Byen ble grunnlagt i 1855 da William B. Ferguson solgte en del av sitt jordsbruksland til North Missouri Railroad Company. Det anla et depot her, Ferguson Station.[8] William B. Ferguson solgte deretter eiendommer til forretningsfolk og huseiere, og dermed vokste det frem en bosetning rundt jernbanestasjonen.[9] I 1894 fikk Ferguson bystatus, da med et folkletall på 1200, fra 185 i 1880. Ferguson fortsatte å vokse både på grunn av jernbaneutviklingen, St. Louis' sterke vekst, og sammenslåing med omliggende steder.[8]
