Dennis Martin Daugaard (1953–) er en amerikansk politiker. Han var guvernør i delstaten Sør-Dakota fra 2011 til 2019. Han tilhører Det republikanske parti.

Liv og virke

Bakgrunn

Han vokste opp på en gård med melke­produksjon i Minnehaha County. Foreldrene var Florence (født Kennedy) og Raymond Daugaard, som begge var født døve.[1] Familien kommuniserte på tegnspråk. Slekts­navnet kommer fra farfaren og farmoren Martin og Margaret Daugaard, som innvandret fra Danmark i 1911.

Dennis Daugaard giftet seg i 1981 med lærer og bibliotekar Linda Schmidt fra Dell Rapids. De har tre barn.[2]

Karriere

Daugaard tok arbeid som oppvaskhjelp, servitør, sveiser og industrimaler for å betale collegeutdannelsen sin ved University of South Dakota. Han studerte så jus ved Northwestern University i Chicago og arbeidet samtidig som sikkerhetsvakt og bussjåfør.[3]

Daugaard arbeidet noen år som advokat i Chicago. I 1981 flyttet han tilbake til slektsgården og ble viseadministrerende direktør i U.S. Bancorp i Sioux Falls. Fra 1990 til 2009 var han utviklingsdirektør, senere administrerende direktør, ved Children’s Home Society of South Dakota, som hjelper barn som har vært utsatt for overgrep og omsorgs­svikt.[3]

Han var valgt til Sør-Dakotas delstatssenat fra 1997–2003, deretter viseguvernør under guvernør Mike Rounds 2003–2011. I 2010 ble han valgt til guvernør i Sør-Dakota, etter å ha vunnet det republikanske primærvalget med 50,4 % av stemmene i første valgrunde, deretter selve guvernørvalget med 61,5 % av stemmene.[4]
