Carlos Andrés Escudé Carvajal (født 10. august 1948 i Buenos Aires i Argentina, død 1. januar 2021 i Buenos Aires) var en argentinsk professor, statsviter og forfatter som i 1990-årene var spesialrådgiver til utenriksminister Guido di Tella.

Liv og virke

Bakgrunn

Carlos Escudé ble uteksaminert med en grad i sosiologi fra Det pavelige katolske universitet i Argentina (Pontificia Universidad Católica Argentina «Santa María de los Buenos Aires») i 1973. I 1977 matrikulerte han ved St. Antony's College i Oxford i England, og flyttet over til Yale University i Connecticut i USA i 1978 da han ble tildelt et Fulbright-fellowship. I 1981 tok han doktorgraden i statsvitenskap ved Yale; i 1984 fikk han et Guggenheim-fellowship.

Karriere

I 1986 ble han hedret med Bernardo O'Higgins-ordenen for ditt fremme av fred og vennskap mellom Argentina og Chile; i 1996 mottok han Konex Award, og i 2003 ble han gjort til Ashley Fellow for 2003-2004 av Trent University (Canada), nominert som «likely the most distinguished political theorist in Latin America».

I 1990-årene var spesialrådgiver til utenriksminister Guido di Tella. Som sådan var han rådgiver om argentinsk utenrikspolitikk vis-à-vis Vestmaktene i særdeleshet i kjølvannet av Falklandskrigen.

Hans bøker er blitt editert i Argentina, USA og Italia. Hans akademiske artikler er også blitt publisert i United Kingdom, Tyskland, Brasil, Spania, Israel, Polen og Mexico. Han har vært gjesteprofessor ved Harvard Universitys Department of Government og ved Madrids Ortega y Gasset-institutt, så vel som visiting fellow ved St. Antony's College (Oxford), Universitetet i Augsburg (Tyskland), Johns Hopkins University (SAIS), UNC (Chapel Hill) and Texas (Austin).

Escudés akademiske verker er blitt assosiert med neomodernisme og med periferrealisme (realismo periférico, som er en politologisk retning utviklet i Latinamerika med utgangspunkt i de interesser og muligheter verdens perifere stater har innen utenrikspolitikken).

Han konverterte til konservativ jødedom.^[5]

I 2010 uttalte han seg støttende om president Cristina Fernández' administrasjons utenrikspolitikk.^[6]

Han døde 1. januar 2021 i Buenos Aires av covid-19.^[7] Hans hustru, Mónica La Madrid, hadde også dødd av sykdommen den 1. oktober 2020.^[8]
