  • Apatosaurus louisae

Apatosaurus (betyr apatisk øgle, av gresk apato = apatisk og saurus = øgle) var en slekt av dinosaur av typen sauropoder. Den levde i Nord-Amerika på slutten av den geologiske perioden jura, for omtrent 150–140 millioner år siden. Den kunne bli 25 meter lang, var 4,5 meter høy, veide mellom 30 og 40 tonn, og var kraftigere bygd enn sin samtidige slektning Diplodocus.

De første Apatosaurus-funnene var svært fragmentariske, og et mer komplett skjelett ble funnet i 1879 og kalt Brontosaurus ble i 1903 antatt å være en ung Apatosaurus, og slektene ble synonymisert med Apatosaurus. Først i 2015 viste en ny analyse at funnet fra 1879, sammen med flere nyere funn, var forskjellige nok fra det originale Apatosaurus-funnet til å få sin egen slekt, slik at Brontosaurus-artene ble tatt ut av Apatosaurus og gitt sin egen slekt.[1]
