Днестар (украински: Дністе́р, молдавски: Nistru) е река во Источна Европа. Најпрвин тече низ Украина, а потоа и низ Молдавија (каде ја дели самопрогласената територија Приднестровие од остатокот на земјата), за конечно да се влие во Црното Море, повторно на украинска територија.

Потекло на поимот

Слив на Днестар

Името на реката води потекло од староиранскиот збор Dānu nazdya („блиска река“). Значењето на зборот «река» во антиката доаѓало од праиндоевропскиот збор dānu (што значи „водотек“). Од таму доаѓа првиот слог од зборот — «Дн-». Грците го нарекувале Danastris, Тирас (грчки Τύρας; најверојатно поради градот Тираспол кој се наоѓа во Молдавија), Италијанците — Џенестера, старите Германи — Агалингус, Турците — Турлој. Во скито-сарматскиот јазик зборот dānu означувал вода, река (во современиот осетиски — «дон»).

Географија

Днестар извира во Украина, близу градот Дрогобич, до границата со Полска и тече кон Црното Море. Нејзиниот тек претставува дел од границата помеѓу Украина и Молдавија, по што тече низ Молдавија во вкупна должина од 398 километри, одвојувајќи дел од територијата на Молдавија со Приднестровие. Подоцна повторно претставува дел од молдавско-украинската граница, потоа тече низ Украина до Црното Море, каде нејзиниот естуар го образува Днестарскиот лиман.

Долж долниот тек на Днестар, западниот брег е висок и ридест, додека источниот е низок и рамен. Реката претставува де факто крај на Евроазиската степа. Нејзини важни притоки се Реут и Бик.
