Vilniaus Senienų muziejus

Senienų muziejus (Alberto Žameto piešinys Vilniaus albume 1863 m.)

Vilniaus Senienų muziejus – pirmasis viešas muziejus Lietuvoje. Jis buvo buvo įkurtas 1855 m. gegužės 11 d. Vilniaus archeologinės komisijos iniciatyva perkeliant į Vilniaus Universiteto aulą privatų grafo Eustachijus Tiškevičius muziejų ir praplečiant jį. Grafo veiklą atspindi mokslinės ekspedicijos po Skandinavijos valstybes surinkta archeologinių titnaginių kirvių kolekcija. Muziejus visuomenei duris atvėrė 1856 m. balandžio 29 d. uždarytame po 1831 m. sukilimo Vilniaus universitete.

Senienų muziejaus istorija skiriama į du periodus: 1) nuo įsteigimo iki reorganizavimo (1855–1865); 2) nuo reorganizavimo iki likvidavimo Pirmojo pasaulinio karo metais (1865–1915). Po 1863 m. sukilimo muziejaus veikla nutraukta suintensyvėjus rusifikavimo politikai. Didesnė dalis vertingų eksponatų buvo išvežta į N. Rumiancevo muziejų Maskvoje, o pertvarkytas muziejus, vis dėlto, 1865 m. buvo atidarytas kaip Vilniaus viešosios bibliotekos dalis. Po Pirmojo pasaulinio karo 1918 m. dr. Jonas Basanavičius naudodamas Senienų muziejaus ir Lietuvių mokslo draugijos rinkinius ėmėsi kurti Istorijos-etnografijos muziejų, tačiau 1920 m. Lenkijai okupavus Vilnių, šis darbas nutrūko. 1920–1940 m. rinkiniai saugoti Vilniaus universitete, o 1941 m. perduoti Lietuvos mokslų akademijai. Vinco Žilėno pastangomis 1952 m. šių rinkinių pagrindu buvo suformuotas Istorijos ir etnografijos muziejus, kuris po nepriklausomybės atkūrimo 1992 m. perkurtas ir pervadintas į Lietuvos Nacionalinį muziejų. Šiuo metu jame yra saugoma apie 1 mln. eksponatų.

Lietuvos nacionaliniame muziejuje, tęsiančiame šio muziejaus tradicijas, sukurta nuolatinė ekspozicija, skirta Senienų muziejaus istorijai.
