Atmanas (skr. आत्मन् = IAST: ātmán) – hinduizmo filosofijoje pirmapradė ir esminė žmonių dvasinė prigimtis. Atmano samprata plėtota jau brahmanose, galutinai susiklostė upanišadose (apie VI–VII a. pr. m. e.).[1] Priklausomai nuo filosofinio požiūrio, atmanas gali būti vartojamas apibūdinant individualią (džyva) arba universalią sielą. Pasak upanišadų, atmanas niekada negimsta ir niekada nemiršta, jis tik keičia kūnus. Tai gyvuose padaruose esanti brahmano dalelytė. Dėl karmos poveikio individualus atmanas esąs susietas su samsara.[2]

Etimologija

Žodis „atmanas“ yra susijęs su indoeuropietiškąja šaknimi *ēt-men („kvėpavimas“) ir yra tos pačios šaknies, kaip senovės anglų kalbos žodis æþm, graikų asthma, vokiečių Atem : atmen („kvėpuoti“).[3] Indų gramatikų aiškintas esąs kilęs iš šaknų at- „judinti“ ir an- „kvėpuoti“.

Žodis ātmán į anglų kalbą paprastai verčiamas kaip Self. Lietuviškai verčiamas „savastimi“, „patybe“.

Vedantoje

Tokios filosofinės mokyklos, kaip advaita (monizmas), laiko, kad kiekvienoje gyvoje esybėje siela yra visiškai tapati brahmanui – visa apimančiai substancijai, pasaulio esmei ir sielai. Tuo tarpu kitos mokyklos, pvz., dvaita (dualizmas) išskiria individualią sielą (atmą) (ji esanti gyvose būtybėse), ir Aukščiausiąją sielą (paramatmą), kaip bent iš dalies atskiras esybes. Taigi, atmanas nurodo individualią sielą ar stebėtoją.

Advaita vedantos filosofijoje atmanas yra universalus gyvenimo principas, visų organizmų įdvasintojas, pasaulio siela.

Jogoje

Jogos filosofinės mokyklos požiūriu, kasdienis pasaulis esąs tikras, nėra vieno universalaus „aš“, kuris būtų kiekviename žmoguje.
