헌팅턴 (웨스트버지니아주)

헌팅턴

헌팅턴(Huntington)은 미국 동부 웨스트버지니아주에 있는 도시이다. 인구 49,007(2006). 웨스트버지니아주 서부, 오하이오 강 연안에 위치한다. 오하이오주, 켄터키주와 접한다. 19세기 중반, 철도가 개통되면서 건설되었는데, 오하이오 강 연안의 세 주가 만나는 지점에 위치하여 교통의 요지로 발전하였다. 철도 관련 산업이 발달하였고, 각종 제조업이 활발하다. 그러나 전성기 때 9만에 가깝던 인구는 5만 이하로 줄어들 정도로 인구 감소 문제가 심각하다. 한때 웨스트버지니아 주에서 주도 찰스턴을 앞질러 인구가 가장 많은 도시였으나, 지금은 찰스턴 다음가는 제2의 도시이다. 오하이오주 및 켄터키 주에 걸치는 도시권 인구는 찰스턴을 앞선다.
