Resident Evil 2 (იაპონ. მეორე ნაწილის რიმეიკის შექმნის იდეა Capcom-ს ჯერ კიდევ პირველი ნაწილის რიმეიკის „Resident Evil“-ის შემდეგ მოუვიდა. მაგრამ იმ დროისთვის სერიის შემქმნელი სინძი მიკამი დაკავებული იყო Resident Evil 4-ზე მუშაობით, შესაბამისად პროექტზე მუშაობა დროებით შეწყდა.[3] 2015 წელს Capcom-მა განაცხადა, რომ მიმდინარეობდა მეორე ნაწილის რიმეიკზე მუშაობა.[4] 2018 წელს E3-ის ცერემონიალზე ნაჩვენები იქნა თამაშის პირველი ტრეილერი[5]

„Resident Evil 2“-ს წილად ხვდა უმაღლესი შეფასებები კრიტიკოსებისაგან. თამაშმა ასევე გაიმარჯვა რამდენიმე პრესტიჟულ დაჯილდოებაზე, მათ შორის — Golden Joystick Awards, NAVGTR Awards, D.I.C.E. Awards და სხვა. 2018 წლის E3-ის ცერემონიალის დამთავრების შემდეგ, Game Critics Awards-ის დაჯილდოებაზე დასახელდა „შოუს საუკეთესო მოვლენად“.[6] საერთო განხილვების საიტ Metacritic-ზე თამაშის PC ვერსია ფლობს 89/100,[7] PS4-ის ვერსია — 91/100,[8] ხოლო XONE-ის ვერსია – 93/100.[9]

თამაში წარმატებული აღმოჩნდა კომერციულადაც, 2019 წლის მონაცემებით მსოფლიოს მასშტაბით თამაშის გაყიდვების რაოდენობა ხუთ მილიონ ეგზემპლარს აღემატება.[10]
