1996年 に着陸したDC-XA
垂直離着陸ロケット (すいちょくりちゃくりくロケット)とは、垂直に離着陸するロケット のことである。2016年現在、再使用型宇宙往還機 を実現する技術として重点的に開発されている。ブルーオリジン とスペースX の両社は発射場への帰還 (RTLS) 任務の後に機体を回収する実証を行なっている。ブルーオリジン社のブルーオリジン・ニューシェパード は宇宙空間 へ到達した試験飛行の後、地球上に垂直に着陸することに世界で初めて成功した。 また、スペースX社のファルコン9 20号機は商用の軌道ロケットを地上に垂直着陸させるという初めての記録を樹立した。
よく混同されるが、垂直離着陸ロケットはヘリコプター のような垂直離着陸機 ではない。
歴史
垂直離着陸ロケットの構想はダグラス航空機 に勤めていたフリップ・ボノ によって、1960年代に調査された。

技術
垂直離着陸ロケットの試験飛行を成功させるために必要ないくつかの要素がある。第一に、推力は重量よりも大きくなければいけない。第二に、推力は通常、偏向 させられていること、またある程度絞られている ことが必要である。機体の誘導には、機体の位置と高度を正確に計算する能力が必要であり、実際の位置と計算された位置の小さなずれが機体の水平位置の大きな誤差を引き起こしうる。姿勢制御装置は通常、機体を正しい姿勢に保つのに必要不可欠である。使い捨て型のロケットとは異なり、垂直離着陸ロケットは着陸脚や他の配備機構 が機体の重さを増やすため、飛行性能は落ちる。空気力学 と質量分布 もまた決定的に重要である。機体は通常、離陸の際にはノーズ を重くしなければならないが、風の影響を大きく受ける着陸時(通常はテール 上)および着陸後には安定させなければならない。
エンジンの点火が様々な状況下でも可能であることもまた重要である。状態の種類は潜在的に、真空 ・極超音速 ・超音速 ・遷音速 ・亜音速 を含んでいる[20] 。
イーロン・マスク は、垂直離着陸ロケットを成功裏に離陸させることができた次は、再利用可能型宇宙往還機を可能にすることで、宇宙飛行の費用を大幅に削減できる可能性について議論している。[21]
大衆文化
宇宙飛行 が始まる前には、垂直着陸の宇宙船 は、優れたロケットの着陸方法として考えられていた。多くのSF作家 は垂直離着陸ロケットが小翼に着陸する様子を描いて大衆文化で見せていて、1993年 には大衆文化で十分に定着した。その後、垂直離着陸ロケットの低空での試験飛行が成功すると、ある作家は、「DC-Xロケットは垂直に打ち上げられ、中高度でホバリングした......。そのロケットは再び中高度で停止し、エンジンの絞り弁は地表に戻った。垂直離着陸の歴史が始まった。バック・ロジャース と同様だ。」と意見を述べた[22] 。
2010年代には、SpaceX 社の再利用可能ロケットも同じように、有名になった。バック・ロジャースは、ある大衆文化で「バック・ロジャースは、再使用可能ロケットの創造を探求する。」と意見を述べた[23] [24] 。
