クイーンズヴェース[2][3]（またはクイーンズヴァーズ、英: Queen's Vase）はイギリスのアスコット競馬場で行われる競馬の競走。

ロイヤルアスコット開催を構成する競走の一つで、近年は3歳馬による長距離戦（1マイル5ハロン211ヤード＝約2808メートル）として行われている。

概要

競走の名前にもなっている通り、この競走に勝つと、エリザベス女王から花器が贈呈される。1838年創設の古い競走で、もともとは当時のヴィクトリア女王から金の花器が下賜される習わしがあった。そのため、競走の異名として「ゴールドヴェース」や「アスコットゴールドヴェース」などとも呼ばれた。イギリスの君主が王だった時代には、「キングスヴェース」として行われてきた。

競走の形態は1マイル5ハロン211ヤードの長距離戦である。創設間もない頃を除き、3歳馬と古馬の混合戦で、1970年代にグレード制が始まるとG3に格付けされた。

しかし、1986年にリステッドレースに格下げされ、翌1987年からは3歳戦となった。現在は、イギリスの3歳限定の重賞競走としては最長距離をもつ競走の一つである。1991年に一度G3に復帰したが、2014年からは再びリステッドレースに格下げとなる[4]。3歳戦としては異例の長距離で行われるため、波乱の少ない競走になっており、2001年から2013年までの13回のうち12回までが単勝の倍率が10倍未満（単勝倍率一桁）で収まっている[5]。

2017年よりG2に格上げされることとともに施行距離が16ハロンから1マイル5ハロン211ヤードに変更となった[6]。

ロイヤルアスコット開催

クイーンズヴェースは2018年現在、ロイヤルアスコット開催5日間の2日目に施行されている。2日目に行われる主な競走は古馬中距離G1競走のプリンスオブウェールズステークスがある。

ロイヤルアスコット開催の競走のなかで、ゴールドカップ、ロイヤルハントカップと共に、優勝杯がエリザベス女王から勝馬の馬主に授与される[7] 3競走の一つである。

レース名について

レース名の変遷

この競走は1838年の創設時にはクイーンズヴェース（Queen's Vase）だった。その名の通り、優勝馬の馬主にはヴィクトリア女王から金製花器が贈呈された。このことから、この競走をゴールドヴェース（Gold Vase）と呼んだり、アスコット競馬場で開催されることからアスコットゴールドヴェース（Ascot Gold Vase）とも呼ばれてきた[8]。

1901年にヴィクトリア女王が崩御し、エドワード7世が即位したが、レース名がキングスヴェース（King's Vase）に改められたのは1903年からである。（エドワード7世が戴冠したのは1902年8月なので、その次の開催からということになる。）

エリザベス女王が即位したのは1952年（戴冠は1953年6月）だが、この競走の名前がクイーンズヴェースに改められたのは1960年の開催からだった。

日本でのカタカナ表記

日本では、クイーンズヴェースの「ヴェース」（Vase、花瓶の意味）を「ヴァーズ」と表記することもある。「Vase」という語はアメリカ風に発音すると「véɪs」（ヴェイス、ヴェース）だが、イギリス風には「vάːz」（ヴァーズ）と発音する。クイーンズヴェースはイギリスの競走であるので、「クイーンズヴァーズ」と表記するほうが、より原語に即している表記ともいえる。

しかし本項では、日本語では一般的にvaseの発音は「ヴェース」のように表記すること、「クイーンズヴェース」と表記する出典が複数あることから、本記事では「クイーンズヴェース」表記で統一する。しかし「クイーンズヴァーズ」という表記にも充分な妥当性がある。（チェスターヴェースも参照。）

歴史

この競走は1838年に創設された。当時の賞品はヴィクトリア女王下賜の金製花器だった。創設まもなくは3歳馬の競走だったが、1840年から古馬にも開放された。

創設以来、2マイル45ヤード（約3259.8メートル）で行われてきた。2005年にヨーク競馬場で代替開催のときに2マイルで行われ、それ以降はアスコット競馬場に戻ってからも2マイル（約3218メートル）で行われていた[9]。

2013年の開催は“Queen's Vase In Memory of Sir Henry Cecil”（ヘンリー・セシル記念クイーンズヴェース）として施行された。これは、2013年6月11日に死去したヘンリー・セシル調教師を追悼したものである。セシル調教師はロイヤルアスコット開催で最多記録（75勝）を持っており、クイーンズヴェースも8勝している。
