NGC 3240 è una galassia a spirale situata nella costellazione dell'Idra, a una distanza di circa 188 milioni di anni luce dalla nostra Via Lattea.[1]

Scoperta

La galassia è stata scoperta il 20 marzo 1835 dall'astronomo britannico John Herschel.[1]

Descrizione

NGC 3240 ha una classe di luminosità III-IV e presenta una larga riga a 21 cm dell'idrogeno neutro.[2] Nella galassia sono presenti anche regioni di idrogeno ionizzato.[2]

Supernova

Il 21 gennaio 2001, all'interno di NGC 3240 è stata scoperta la supernova SN 2001M da A. B. Aazami e W. D. Li nel corso del programma di ricerca astronomica LOTOSS dell'Osservatorio Lick.[4] La supernova è stata classificata di tipo Ia.[5]

Gruppo di NGC 3233

NGC 3240 fa parte di gruppo di tre galassie, il Gruppo di NGC 3233. Il terzo membro del gruppo è ESO 567-51.[6]
