Thomas Aikenhead

Thomas Aikenhead (um 1678 – 8. janúar 1697) var skoskur nemandi frá Edinburgh, sem árið 1696 var ákærður fyrir að lýsa því opinberlega yfir að honum fyndist kristin trú vera eintóm vitleysa. Hann var dæmdur sekur fyrir guðlast og tekinn af lífi.

Aikenhead bað dómstólinn að auðsýna sér miskunn og reyndi að draga ummæli sín til baka en allt kom fyrir ekki og var hann dæmdur til hengingar. Við gálgann hélt Aikenhead því fram að siðferðisreglur væru mannasetningar en ekki frá guði komnar. Hann var sagður hafa dáið með biblíu í hendi og sýnt öll merki iðrunar.

Aikenhead var síðasti maðurinn sem var hengdur fyrir guðlast í Bretlandi.
