Merak Biru (senjata)

Merak Biru (bahasa Inggris: Blue Peacock), atau yang sebelumnya bernama Kelinci Biru (bahasa Inggris: Blue Bunny), dan awalnya bernama Kelinci Coklat (bahasa Inggris: Brown Bunny, merupakan sebuah proyek pengembangan senjata nuklir taktis yang dilakukan oleh Britania Raya pada tahun 1950-an.

Tujuan dari proyek ini untuk menyimpan sebanyak 10 kiloton ranjau darat nuklir di Jerman. Ranjau darat tersebut kemudian akan dikubur di Dataran Jerman Utara dalam rangka untuk "tidak hanya merusak sarana dan prasarana yang ada dalam cakupan yang luas, tetapi juga untuk meredam adanya upaya untuk pengambilalihan wilayah yang sudah diduduki dalam jangka waktu yang cukup untuk proses kontaminasi" [sic][1] pada masa invansi Uni Soviet dari timur.[2] Ranjau tersebut diatur untuk meledak dalam kurun waktu 8 hari setelah diaktifkan ataupun diledakkan dengan pemicu.[3]

Bom nuklir bertenaga ayam

Terdapat sebuah masalah teknis yang akan dihadapi saat musim dingin: temperatur dari perangkat yang dikubur dapat menurun secara drastis, sehingga dapat membuat mekanisme dari ranjau yang dipasang akan terhenti karena temperatur yang sangat rendah.[4] Beberapa metode telah dipelajari untuk mengatasi masalah ini, seperti dengan menyelimuti ranjau tersebut dengan selimut yang cukup tebal.

Diantara sekian metode yang ada, terdapat usulan yang merancang agar suhu dijaga konstan dengan memasukkan ayam dalam pelindung ranjau beserta dengan makanan dan air.[5] Ayam tersebut diperkirakan akan tetap hidup hingga seminggu lamanya. Panas yang dihasilkan oleh tubuh ayam dianggap dapat menjaga temperatur dari komponen ranjau yang ditanam.[4] Akan tetapi, usulan ini dianggap begitu konyol, sehingga disalahartikan sebagai candaan April Mop saat berkas-berkas Merak Biru ditemukan kembali pada 1 April 2004.[4] Tom O'Leary, selalu kepala edukasi dan interpretasi pada badan Arsip Nasional, menyatakan kepada media bahwa "Itu mungkin terlihat sebagai sebuah candaan April Mop, akan tetapi tentu kenyataannya tidak. Badan yang merancangnya tidak bercanda semata"[6]
