Ավարտել է Քյոնիգսբերգի համալսարանը (1891)։ Մյունխենի համալսարանի պրոֆեսոր (1906-ից)։ Աշխատանքները վերաբերում են ատոմի, մետաղների տեսությանը, մաթեմատիկական ֆիզիկային։ Կատարելագործել է Բորի ատոմի մոդելը՝ առաջարկելով քվանտային պայմանների ավելի ընդհանուր ձևակերպում։ Զոմմերֆելդը ստեղծել է ջրածնանման ատոմների նուրբ կառուցվածքի տեսությունը (1916)։ Տվել է Վիդեման-Ֆրանցի օրենքի ավելի ճիշտ բանաձևը և բացատրել մետաղներում դիտվող մի շարք երևույթներ (ջոուլյան ջերմություն, ջերմաէլեկտրական երևույթներ)։ Մշակել է դիֆրակցիայի մաթեմատիկական խիստ տեսությունը (1895), ստացել գլանային ֆունկցիաների ինտեգրալային ներկայացումը (Զոմմերֆելդի ինտեգրալ, 1896), լուծել երկու միջավայրերի սահմանում տեղադրված ուղղահայաց դիպոլի ճառագայթման խնդիրը (1909)։ Զոմմերֆելդը էական ավանդ է ներդրել ռենտգենյան ճառագայթների հետազոտման գործում, մշակել էլեկտրոնների արգելակման ճառագայթման տեսությունը (1931)։
