מיקרו הבעה היא הבעת פנים שנמשכת רק לרגע קצר. זוהי תוצאה של תגובה רגשית רצונית ובלתי רצונית שקורות בו-זמנית ומתנגשות זו עם זו, המתרחשת כאשר האמיגדלה מגיבה כראוי לגירויים שאדם חווה, בעוד שהאדם רוצה להסתיר את הרגש הספציפי הזה. כתוצאה מכך האדם מציג לזמן קצר מאוד את רגשותיו האמיתיים ומיד לאחר מכן תגובה רגשית שקרית.[1]

רגשות אנושיים הם תגובה ביו-פסיכו-סוציאלית לא מודעת הנובעת מהאמיגדלה והם נמשכים בדרך כלל 0.5–4.0 שניות,[1] אם כי מיקרו-הבעה תמשך בדרך כלל פחות מ-½ שנייה.[2] בניגוד להבעות פנים רגילות, קשה מאוד או כמעט בלתי אפשרי להסתיר תגובות מיקרו-הבעה. אי אפשר לשלוט במיקרו-הבעות, משום שהן קורות בשבריר שנייה, אבל אפשר ללכוד הבעות כאלו עם מצלמה במהירות גבוהה ולהציג אותן מחדש במהירויות איטיות בהרבה.[3] מיקרו-הבעות מבטאות את שבעת הרגשות האוניברסליים: גועל, כעס, פחד, עצב, אושר, בוז והפתעה. אולם, בשנות התשעים, הרחיב פול אקמן את רשימת הרגשות וכלל בה מגוון של רגשות חיוביים ושליליים שלא כולם מתבטאים בשרירי הפנים. הרגשות שהוא הוסיף הם: שעשוע, מבוכה, חרדה, אשמה, גאווה, הקלה, שביעות רצון, עונג ובושה.[4][5]
