"זרעי קיץ" הוא האלבום המלא הרביעי של הזמר מאיר אריאל. האלבום יצא בשנת 1993, חמש שנים לאחר האלבום הקודם "ירוקות" (1988), ושלוש שנים לאחר המיני אלבום "עברנו את פרעה" (1990).

כל המילים והלחנים באלבום נכתבו על ידי אריאל פרט ללחני השירים "זרעי קיץ" ו"סתם אחד" אותם כתבו אריאל ושלום חנוך יחד. חנוך גם עיבד והפיק מוזיקלית את האלבום, ובהפקה לצד אריק קנלר השתתף גם בנו של אריאל שחר אריאל. הסגנון המוזיקלי של האלבום שונה מעט מקודמיו בכך שהוא ניחן במלודיות בלוזיות שלא נשמעו באלבומיו הקודמים של אריאל. למרות זאת, מאפייני היצירה הקבועים של אריאל – סגנון הפולק רוק והשפעותיו של בוב דילן – עדיין מלווים גם את האלבום הזה. אריאל אף כינה את עצמו בהופעה של שירי האלבום "בוב דילן הצ'כי".

עטיפת האלבום

את עטיפת האלבום ציירה שירז, בתו של אריאל, בעת לימודי עיצוב בחו"ל. מאיר ביקש ממנה שתיקח פלפל, תחתוך אותו בחזית ומאחור, ותצייר דרכו את השמש. עטיפת האלבום עוררה סערה בארץ, כאשר אנשים התלוננו כי הציור של הפלפל על העטיפה, מזכיר וגינה.[1]

הקונספט

האלבום ניתן להגדרה כאלבום קונספט. הוא רך ונעים מקודמיו, אולי כביטוי לתחושות החופש והאהבה העומדות במרכז האלבום. אותה רוח מתבטאת גם בשם האלבום ועטיפתו (ראו לעיל), וכן בשמות שירי האלבום – ששונו במסגרת איסוף השירים לאלבום כדי שיתאימו לרעיון המרכזי שלו. עם זאת, חוברת האלבום כוללת גם את רשימת השירים בשמותיהם המקוריים, יחד עם הערות והארות בנוגע לשינויי השמות:

  1. גל אהבה. השיר קיבל את שם האלבום – "זרעי קיץ", והושם בראש רשימת השירים מכיוון שהוא השיר בו מתבטא הרעיון המרכזי באלבום בדרך הטובה ביותר.
  2. כצייד על משמר.
  3. האם זה אמיתי. שיר זה ושיר נוסף שהם שירי המחאה החדים והעוקצניים באלבום קיבלו את השם "קוצים".
  4. פסל של מלחין.
  5. רפרוף קליל.
  6. גיבורה שלי.
  7. גופים כלכליים.
  8. תופסים עלייך טרמפ.
  9. דוקרת כעקרב.
  10. איפה אני. השיר קיבל את השם "תקציר שירי החורף הבא", והושם בסוף רשימת השירים מכיוון שהן בשמו והן בתוכנו הוא מהווה סגירת מעגל עם השיר הראשון.
