ג'ון ברטון פּיין (באנגלית: John Barton Payne;‏ 26 בינואר 1855 – 24 בינואר 1935) היה פוליטיקאי עורך דין ושופט אמריקאי, שכיהן כמזכיר הפנים של ארצות הברית בשנים 1920–1921 בממשלו של הנשיא וודרו וילסון.

ביוגרפיה

ג'ון פיין נולד בפרנטיטאון, וירג'יניה המערבית כבנם של איימוס פיין, רופא וחוואי, ושל אליזבת ברטון.[1]

ב-1876 הוא התקבל ללשכת עורכי הדין של וירג'יניה המערבית וחמש שנים לאחר מכן הוא נכנס לפוליטיקה כאשר נבחר כיושב ראש המפלגה הדמוקרטית במחוז פרסטון. ב-1883 הוא עבר לשיקגו וב-1893 נבחר כשופט בבית המשפט הגבוה של מחוז קוק, תפקיד בו הוא כיהן עד התפטרותו ב-1898.[2] לאחר התפטרותו היה פיין לשותף בכיר במשרד עורכי הדין "וינסטון, פיין, סטראון ושאו".

ב-1913 דחה פיין הצעה של הנשיא וודרו וילסון לשמש כפרקליט המדינה של ארצות הברית.[3] לאחר כניסת ארצות הברית למלחמת העולם הראשונה עבר פיין לוושינגטון די. סי. כדי לשמש כיועץ המשפטי של "תאגיד צי החירום" (Emergency Fleet Corporation). בשנים 1919–1920 הוא שימש כיושב ראש "מועצת הספנות של ארצות הברית" (United States Shipping Board). במרץ 1920, לאחר התפטרותו של פרנקלין ליין, מינה הנשיא וילסון את פיין כמזכיר הפנים של ארצות הברית במקומו. פיין כיהן בתפקיד עד תום נשיאותו של וילסון.

מאוקטובר 1921 ועד מותו שימש פיין כיושב ראש הצלב האדום האמריקאי.

חיים אישיים

ב-1878 נשא פיין לאישה את קייט בנקר. היא נפטרה לאחר מחלה קשה. ב-1913 הוא נישא בשנית לג'ני ביירד בראיין, שהלכה לעולמה ב-1919.

ג'ון ברטון פיין נפטר ב-24 בינואר 1935 כתוצאה מדלקת ריאות לאחר ניתוח כריתת התוספתן בגיל 79. הוא נטמן בבית הקברות אוק היל בוושינגטון, לצד אשתו השנייה. במלחמת העולם השנייה נקראה אחת מאוניות ליברטי על שמו.
