שבלול רומי (או החילזון הרומי; שם מדעי: Helix pomatia) הוא חילזון ממשפחת הקדמומיים וסדרת שבלולי יבשה בעל ריאות החי ביבשה. השבלול הרומי נפוץ ברחבי אירופה ומשמש גם בתור מאכל אסקרגו.

תיאור

לשבלול הרומי קונכייה גדולה יחסית, גובהה נע בין 30 ל-45 מ"מ וקוטרה 30–35 מ"מ, כך שצורתה די כדורית. יש בה כ-5–6 פיתולים. צבעה חום בהיר עד צבעי קרם.[2]

מראהו דומה באופן כללי לשבלול הגינה. צבע הגוף של השבלול הרומי הוא חום-צהבהב-אפור. הרגל רחבה בעלת שוליים בולטים. בראשו של השבלול הרומי זוג משושים ארוכים ועליהם העיניים, שעיקר תפקודן הוא להבחין בין אור לחושך. המשושים הקדמיים קצרים יותר ונקראים "בחנינים" ובהם איברים הרגישים לריח, מישוש וטעם. שני זוגות המשושים אלה מהווים את איברי החושים של השבלול. פה השבלול נפתח בלסתות שבאמצעותן הוא אוסף את המזון, בפיו ישנה מגרדת או משננת (radula), איבר בעל מספר רב של שיניים קטנות, שבאמצעותה הוא טוחן וחותך את המזון לפני העברתו למערכת העיכול.

אורח חיים ואקולוגיה

בניגוד למרבית החלזונות בארץ ישראל, שפעילים בחורף, השבלול הרומי פעיל באביב ובקיץ. בחורף הוא נכנס לתרדמת חורף, מתכנס לקונכייתו ואוטם אותה בחתם גירני (epiphragma).

השבלול הרומי ניזון בעיקר מחומרים צמחיים מתים, בעיקר צמחים ירודים, רקב צמחי, פטריות, עובש וחומרים אורגניים על האדמה, אך גם מצמחים ירוקים כגון עלים או נבטים.

השבלול הרומי מתקדם באמצעות כיווץ והרפיה של שרירי הרגל, כאשר הוא מחליק על גבי ריר אותו הוא מפריש מהסולייה. הריר נועד להגן על רגל השבלול מחפצים חדים, להקל עליו את ה"החלקה" בעת תנועתו ואף להידבק למשטחים חלקים או אנכיים.

בית גידול

השבלול הרומי נפוץ כמעט בכל רחבי אירופה. בדרום-מזרח אירופה הוא חי ביערות, שטחים פתוחים, גינות, וכרמים, במיוחד ליד נהרות. בגלל הצורך בסלע גיר לייצור הקונכייה הגדולה שלו, מוגבל השבלול הרומי לבתי גידול גירניים בהם יש סלעי גיר. במרכז אירופה הוא חי ביערות פתוחים ובאזורים גירניים עם שיחים. הוא מעדיף אזורים לחים וקרים, וצריך קרקע חופשית בה אפשר לחפור ולהתחפר (לצורך תרדמת והטלת בצים). הוא יכול לחיות עד גובה של 2,100 מטר מעל פני הים, אך בדרך כלל לא נמצא בגבהים שמעל 2000 מטר.[2] בדרום אנגליה הוא נמצא בעיקר באזורי עשבייה ובתה, ולא בגינות. קצב הריבוי שלו נמוך ויכולת תפוצתו מוגבלת.[2]

אף על פי שמצב השימור של השבלול הרומי לפי ה-IUCN הוא "ללא חשש" (LC), הוא מאוים על ידי אובדן בית גידול.

השבלול הרומי שימש למאכל עוד מתקופת רומא העתיקה ואף הורבה בשבי לשם כך. הרומאים הפיצו אותו בכל רחבי אירופה בשטחים שכבשו. מכיוון שמין שבלול זה זוהה עם הרומאים, במספר שפות שמו העממי הוא "השבלול הרומי", כולל בעברית.

רבייה

השבלול הרומי הוא הרמאפרודיט, כלומר: בעל מערכת רבייה הן של זכר והן של נקבה, כך שבסיום ההזדווגות שני השבלולים מופרים ומטילים ביצים. ההזדווגות מתחילה בדרך בסוף חודש מאי ואת הבצים הוא מטיל ביוני ויולי בצברים של 40–65 בצים. גודל כל ביצה הוא 5.5-6.5 מ"מ.[2] הצעירים בוקעים מהביצה כעבור 3–4 שבועות. לעיתים הם אוכלים את אחיהם הקטנים בעיתות רעב ומחסור (קניבליזם). הם מגיעים לבגרות כעבור 2–5 שנים, וחיים בדרך הכלל כ-20 שנה, כאשר תוחלת החיים המקסימלית שנצפתה היא 35 שנים.[2]
