יוסי מטיאס (נולד ב-1958) הוא מתמטיקאי ומדען מחשב ישראלי, יזם ואיש היי-טק. פרופסור באוניברסיטת תל אביב וזוכה פרס גדל ופרס קאנֶלַקיס (אנ'). סגן נשיא בגוגל העולמית ומנכ״ל מרכז המחקר והפיתוח של גוגל בישראל במשך 18 שנה. בשנת 2024 קודם להיות ראש מחלקת המחקר בגוגל העולמית.

קורות חיים

יוסי מטיאס שירת כטייס בחיל האוויר הישראלי. הוא סיים תואר ראשון בהצטיינות מאוניברסיטת תל אביב (1985), תואר שני בהצטיינות ממכון ויצמן למדע (1987) בהנחיית עדי שמיר ותואר שלישי בהצטיינות באוניברסיטת תל אביב (1992) בהנחיית עוזי וישקין. בין השנים 1992 ל-1997 היה חוקר במעבדות בל. משנת 1997 הוא חבר סגל בבית הספר למדעי המחשב באוניברסיטת תל אביב. בין השנים 2004 ל-2006 היה מרצה אורח באוניברסיטת סטנפורד. בשנת 2006 מונה להקים ולהוביל את מרכז המחקר והפיתוח של גוגל בתל אביב, ומשנת 2009 הוא משמש כמנכ"ל מרכז המחקר והפיתוח של גוגל בישראל (תל אביב וחיפה). באוקטובר 2014 מונה לסגן נשיא בגוגל העולמית[1].

במשך למעלה מעשור היה בצוות ההובלה של Google Search (מנוע החיפוש של Google) וכיום הוא בצוות ההובלה של ארגון המחקר Google Research בו הוא מוליך תחומים מרכזיים בתחום הבינה המלאכותית.[2] הוא אחראי על מחקר ויישום הבינה המלאכותית בתחומי הבריאות[3][4] ומשבר האקלים,[5] ועל נושאים מרכזיים בתחום הבינה המלאכותית ליכולת בנושאי שפה ושיחה.

בהנהגתו צמח מרכז גוגל הישראלי למקור חדשנות טכנולוגית בתחומים אסטרטגיים,[6] עם מוצרים וטכנולוגיות בתחומי החיפוש (כ- Google Autocomplete, Live Results, Google Search Console ועוד), ניתוח וכריית מידע (כ-Google Trends ,Google Insights for Search,Google Visualizations ועוד), יישומים (כשיפורים ב-Gmail), תשתיות (כשיפור תעבורה ברשתות), YouTube (כ-Interactive Video ו-Contest platform) ועוד. מטיאס הכריז על שיתופי פעולה עם רשות העתיקות ועם מוזיאון ישראל להעלאת צילומי המגילות הגנוזות לאינטרנט[7][8], ועם יד ושם להעלאת תכנים לאינטרנט[9][10] והניח יסוד להקמת Google Cultural Institute. מטיאס הוביל טכנולוגיות פורצות דרך בתחום בינה מלאכותית כגוגל דופלקס - Google Duplex[11][12] ויופוניה (Euphonia)[13], וישומים פורצי דרך לטלפון כסינון שיחות (Call Screen)[14] וכיתוביות חיות (Live Caption)[15].

ב-2012 מטיאס ייסד את קמפוס תל אביב (Campus Tel Aviv)[16] - מרכז יזמות טכנולוגי של Google - ואת תוכנית Google Launchpad שהפכה לתוכנית גלובלית Google for Startup Accelerator.

ב-2024 קודם מטיאס לראש מחלקת המחקר של גוגל העולמית.[17]

הוקרה ופרסים אקדמיים

מטיאס חיבר למעלה ממאה וחמישים מאמרים מדעיים ורשם למעלה מ-70 פטנטים. הוא זוכה פרס גדל (ביחד עם נגה אלון ומריו סגדי) לשנת 2005 במדעי המחשב, עבור עבודה בנושא אלגוריתמים יעילים לניתוח רצפי מידע. בשנת 2009 נבחר כעמית ACM[18] על תרומותיו לשיטות ניתוח Big Data. בשנת 2015 קיבל אות הוקרה מ-IEEE כאחד ממייסדי ההיי-טק הישראלי[19]. בשנת 2019 זכה בפרס קאנֶלַקיס (אנ') (ביחד עם נגה אלון, פיליפ גיבונס ומריו סגדי)[20].
