קהילת בני ישראל הוא בית כנסת השוכן בגלווסטון, טקסס, ארצות הברית. בית הכנסת נוסד על ידי מהגרים יהודים מגרמניה בשנת 1868, זוהי הקהילה היהודית הרפורמית הוותיקה ביותר במדינה.

תוכנית גלווסטון, שפעלה בין השנים 1907 עד 1914, סייעה למשוך אלפי מהגרים יהודים ממזרח אירופה לאזור חוף המפרץ של ארצות הברית, בכלל, ולעיר טקסס, בפרט.

היסטוריה

יהודי גרמניה היו בין המהגרים הרבים לגלווסטון בשנות הארבעים של המאה ה-19. בית הקברות היהודי הראשון הוקם בטקסס בשנת 1852. ארבע שנים מאוחר יותר הם ארגנו את המוסדות הקהילתיים היהודיים הראשונים במדינה. מתוך ההתארגנויות האלו נוסדה קהילת בני ישראל בשנת 1868, הקהילה הרפורמית הראשונה במדינה והקהילה היהודית השנייה (קהילה אורתודוקסית התקיימה ביוסטון). בית הספר של הקהילה נוסד בשנת 1869. החל משנת 1877 נכללו לימודי השפה העברית כחלק מתוכנית הלימודים ב-20 ביוני 1875, הקהילה הצביעה על הצטרפותה לאיחוד הקהילות העבריות האמריקניות[1].

אברהם כהן לאבאט, אחד מחלוצי תנועת היהדות הרפורמית בארצות הברית, עבר לגלווסטון בשנת 1878 והיה פעיל בולט בקהילה עד למותו בשנת 1899. החל משנת 1888 הנהיג את הקהילה הרב הנרי כהן במשך יותר מחמישה עשורים, בתקופות של הגירה מרובה של יהודים ממזרח אירופה ושתי מלחמות עולם. לאחר סופת ההוריקן בגלווסטון בשנת 1900 שהרס בתים רבים באי והרג 6,000 איש הוא גייס את חברי הקהילה לדאוג לתושבי האי שנפגעו, יהודים ושאינם יהודים.

בשנת 1870 הזמינה הקהילה את מר טאק, המאסטר הגדול של לשכת הבונים החופשיים של טקסס, לטקס הנחת אבן הפינה למבנה בית הכנסת. הקהילה המשיכה לגדול, ובסוף שנות השמונים של המאה ה-19 עלה הצורך בבית כנסת חדש וגדול יותר. ניקולס ג'יי קלייטון, שהיה אדריכל בולט בטקסס של מבנים דתיים, הוזמן לעצב את בית הכנסת החדש. המבנה, שנחנך בשנת 1890, עוצב בסגנון ויקטוריאני והיה מפואר ומעוטר, עד שהפך לנקודת ציון הבולטת בעיר. הקהילה השתמשה בבניין זה עד למכירתו בשנות ה-50 של המאה ה-20 ללשכת הבונים החופשיים ועברה לבית כנסת חדש אחר.

בית הקהילה על שם הנרי כהן

גידול הקהילה נמשך גם תחילת המאה העשרים והיא נזקקה למרחב נוסף לצורך פעילותה. בשנת 1928 הוחלט להקים מרכז בסמוך למבנה בית הכנסת. בית הקהילה נקרא על שם הרב הנרי כהן, שהיה רב הקהילה. המתחם היה בשימוש הקהילה עד לשנות החמישים, אז עבר, יחד עם בית הכנסת למבנה מחוץ למרכז העיר. בית הקהילה עוצב על ידי טיבור ברמן.
