Mauisaurus est un genre fossile de Plesiosauroidea (plésiosaurien au long cou) de la famille des Elasmosauridae. Il vivait au Crétacé supérieur dans les eaux de l’actuelle Nouvelle-Zélande. L'espèce type est Mauisaurus haasti et, en 2022, le genre est resté monotypique.

Historique

Le genre Mauisaurus et l'espèce Mauisaurus haasti sont décrits en 1874 par le paléontologue écossais James Hector (1834-1907)[1],[2].

Nomen dubium

Ce genre Mauisaurus et son espèce Mauisaurus haasti ont été déclarés nomen dubium de la sous-famille des Aristonectinae en 2017 par Hiller et al.[3],[2].

Étymologie

Son nom est formé à partir du nom d'un demi-dieu maori appelé Māui + saurus, lézard.

Répartition

Selon Paleobiology Database, en 2022, les fossiles ont été trouvés en Antarctique, en Argentine, au Chili et en Nouvelle-Zélande[4].

Description

Mauisaurus haasti, l'espèce type, est la seule espèce connue du genre[note 1]. Il était le plus grand plésiosaure, et peut-être le plus grand reptile marin dans les eaux de Nouvelle-Zélande à l'époque. Une poignée de spécimens ont été trouvés, mais seulement quelques-uns sont bien conservés et presque complets. Le seul autre plésiosaure de Nouvelle-Zélande, Tuarangisaurus keyesi, ne peut pas être considéré comme un parent direct de Mauisaurus.
