Wiljo Saaristo

Apteekkineuvos Wiljo August Saaristo (11. tammikuuta 1904 Viipuri – 11. tammikuuta 1979 Kotka) oli suomalainen apteekkialan vaikuttaja ja tunnettu lohiperhojen sitoja.

Perhetausta

Wiljo Saariston vanhemmat olivat viipurilainen tehtailija August Saaristo ja Anna Saaristo (o.s. Väisänen). Wiljo Saaristo oli naimisissa vuodesta 1938 farmaseutti Elsa Saariston (o.s. Karppinen) kanssa[1].

Opinnot

Suoritettuaan keskikoulun Viipurin reaalikoulussa Saaristo meni vuonna 1923 harjoittelijaksi Punaisen lähteen torin apteekkiin Viipurissa. Kolmivuotisen harjoittelun jälkeen hän alkoi opiskella farmasiaa Helsingin yliopistossa ja valmistui farmaseutiksi 1928 ja proviisoriksi 1937[1].

Ura

Opiskeluaikanaan ja sen jälkeen Saaristo työskenteli lähinnä Koillismaan, Lapin ja Itä-Suomen apteekeissa, mikä antoi mahdollisuuden harrastaa kalastusta ja metsästystä. Jatkosodan aikana hän oli Äänislinnan apteekinhoitajana. Vuonna 1946 Saaristo sai Ivalon apteekin apteekkioikeuden. Tämän jälkeen hän toimi apteekkarina Ilomantsissa vuodesta 1952, kunnes muutti 1962 Kotkaan huolehtimaan Kotkan 1. apteekista eli Kauppatorin apteekista.[1]

Wiljo Saaristo toimi muun muassa Pharmakon Oy:n, Lääketukku Oy:n ja Tamron hallintoneuvostoissa ja Suomen Hypoteekkiyhdistyksen johtokunnan jäsenenä. Apteekkineuvoksen arvon hän sai 1968.[1]

Harrastukset

Saariston harrastuksiin sisältyi lohiperhojen sidonta ja perhokalastus. Innostus lohenongintaan ja perhokalastukseen alkoi Saariston työskennellessä Hyrynsalmen apteekissa 1927. Sysäyksen lohiperhojen sitomiseen antoi tapaaminen Kajaani-yhtiön ylimetsänhoitajan Oskari Röngän kanssa 1930. Tukeutuen Röngän oppeihin ja William Walleniuksen vuonna 1923 julkaisemaan Urheilukalastajan käsikirjaan sekä muuhun lohiperhokirjallisuuteen Saaristo kouluttautui taitavaksi perhojen sitojaksi, joka teki myös omia muunnoksia ja perhomalleja. Hän oli monen suomalaisen perhokalastajan oppi-isä ja innoittaja.[2][3]

Saariston suunnittelemia runkorakenteita on esitelty klassisia lohiperhoja esittelevässä kirjassa Farlows Salmon Flies.[4]
