Karel Bořivoj Presl (17. helmikuuta 1794 Praha – 8. lokakuuta 1852 Praha) oli itävaltalainen (böömiläinen) kasvitieteilijä.[1][2]

Elämä ja ura

Preslistä tuli lääketieteen tohtori vuonna 1818, Böömin museon luonnontieteellisten kokoelmien kuraattori vuonna 1822 ja Prahan yliopiston luonnonhistorian ja tekniikan professori vuonna 1832. Hänen veljensä Jan Svatopluk Presl oli eläintieteen ja mineralogian professori. [1][2]

Hänen päätutkimuksensa oli omistettu kasvien systematiikalle. Opintojensa päätyttyä Presl matkusti vuonna 1817 jalkaisin läpi Italian, myös Sisilian, ja tutki erityisesti Etnan ja Nebrodin alueen kasvistoa. Pitkän Italian-matkan jälkeen vuonna 1817 hän kirjoitti teokset Gramineæ siculæ (1818), Cyperaceæ et Gramineæ siculæ (1820) ja muokkasi sitten böömiläisen Thaddäus Haenken Etelä-Amerikasta tuomat kasvikokoelmat suureksi teokseksi Reliquiæ Hænkeanæ (1830–1836). Hän julkaisi myös teokset Flora sicula (1826), Symbolæ botanicæ (1832–1833), Tentamen Pteridographiæ (1836), näyttävän teoksen, jossa hän kuvasi useita tuhansia saniaisia, ja Hymenophyllaceæ (1843). Vuonna 1834 Preslistä tuli Böömin kuninkaallisen tiedeseuran jäseneksi, ja samana vuonna Wienin keisarillinen akatemia nimitti hänet jäsenekseen. Vuodesta 1838 lähtien Presl oli Preussin tiedeakatemian jäsen.[1][2]

Toisin kuin veljensä, joka pyrki edistämään tšekkiläistä kirjallisuutta ja kirjoitti lähes kaikki teoksensa tšekiksi, Presl kirjoitti latinaksi ja saksaksi, mikä varmisti hänen teostensa paljon laajemman levityksen tiedemaailmassa.[2]
