John Lort Stokes

Amiraali John Lort Stokes (1812 – 11. kesäkuuta 1885) oli Royal Navyn upseeri, joka seilasi HMS Beaglellä melkein 18 vuotta.[1]

Hän liittyi laivastoon vuonna 1824, ja lokakuussa 1825 hän tuli Beaglelle silloisen kapteenin Philip Parker Kingin alaisuuteen. Beagle osallistui hänen alaisuudessaan Etelä-Amerikan vesien tutkimiseen. Vuonna 1828 alus siirtyi Robert FitzRoyn komentoon.

Beaglen toisen matkan jälkeen Stokes ylennettiin luutnantiksi ja teki John Clements Wickhamin alaisuudessa Australaasian vesien tutkimuksen. Wickhamin sairastuessa vakavasti vuonna 1841 Stokes otti laivalla komennon. Laiva palasi Britanniaan 1843, jolloin Stokes lähti laivalta ja kirjoitti Beaglen vuosina 1837–1843 tekemistä Australian tutkimuksista kirjan Discoveries in Australia, with an account of the coasts and rivers explored and surveyed during the voyage of the Beagle, 1837–1843. Kirja julkaistiin 1846.

Heinäkuussa 1846 Stokes ylennettiin kapteeniksi ja tutki Uutta-Seelantia neljän vuoden ajan. Vuosina 1860–1863 hän komensi laivaa, jonka tehtävä oli vartioida Englannin kanaalin rannikoita. Vuonna 1863 hän jäi eläkkeelle, ja sama vuonna hänestä tuli kontra-amiraali. Vara-amiraali hänestä tuli 1871 ja amiraali 1877. Hän kuoli kotonaan Scotchwellissä Walesissa vuonna 1885.
