August Tavaststjerna

Frans August Theodor Tavaststjerna tai Tawaststjerna (7. helmikuuta 1821 Karlberg, Ruotsi – 24. tammikuuta 1882 Pietari) oli suomalainen hovineuvos, näytelmäkirjailija, säveltäjä ja tenorilaulaja.

Henkilöhistoria

Tavaststjernan vanhemmat olivat majuri, Karlbergin sotakorkeakoulun tykistökoulun johtaja Jakob Johan Tawaststjerna ja Magdalena Christina Caijraenius. Hänen puolisonsa vuodesta 1848 oli Sofia Adelaide Jacobsson (k. 1906). Tavaststjerna valmistui upseeriksi 1839, mutta erosi palveluksesta 1849.[1] Hän palveli aluksi Turun tarkk'ampujapataljoonassa ja sitten Helsingissä. Erottuaan palveluksesta ja muutettuaan Venäjälle Tavaststjerna työskenteli tullivirkailijana Kronstadtissa sekä Pietarissa eri virkatoimissa.[2] Myöhemmin hän oli Suomen kauppa-asiamiehenä Räävelissä ja työskenteli viimeksi virkamiehenä venäläisessä sotamuonavirastossa.

Taiteellinen tuotanto

Tavaststjerna ei saanut koskaan varsinaista säveltaiteellista koulutusta[1], mutta silti sävelsi, esiintyi tenorilaulajana ja kirjoitti näytelmiä. Hän oli miespääosassa ensimmäisessa suomalaisessa oopperassa Kaarle-kuninkaan metsästys, jonka ensiesitys oli vuonna 1852 Helsingissä. Vuonna 1870 esitettiin hänen säveltämänsä kolminäytöksinen laulunäytelmä tai ooppera Semfira (tai Zemfira).[2] Se on mukaelma Aleksandr Puškinin samannimisestä näytelmästä.[1] Tavaststjerna sävelsi musiikin myös joihinkin laulunäytelmiin, muun muassa Fredrik Cygnaeuksen näytelmään Pygmalion. Hän kirjoitti myös useita näytelmäkäsikirjoituksia.
