Santiago de Chilen jaio zen 1919ko uztailaren 16an, Arturo Recabarren eta Isaura Valenzuelaren semea. Lehen eta bigarren mailako ikasketak Alonso de Ercilla Institutuan, Aplikazio lizeoa eta Federico Hanssen Gaueko Lezeoan egin zituen, guztiak Santiagon.
